Eric Brown’s remarkable career spans over two decades of leadership, innovation, and dedication to utility arboriculture, earning him the prestigious 2024 Utility Arborist Award. As the Vegetation Management Manager at Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), Eric has been instrumental in transforming Electric Transmission and Distribution Vegetation Management, spearheading initiatives that raise industry standards and promote environmental stewardship.

Joining SMUD in 2016, Eric manages the vegetation program across SMUD’s vast service area, which covers over 900 square miles. He oversees the care of more than 200,000 trees, ensuring safe and efficient operations in diverse landscapes, from rugged wilderness to urban spaces. Before his tenure at SMUD, Eric spent 20 years with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), where he rose through the ranks, ultimately managing both Electric Transmission and Distribution Vegetation Management programs.

In addition to his role at SMUD, Eric’s leadership extends into the broader industry, having served as President, Vice President, and Western Region Representative of the Utility Arborist Association (UAA). His commitment to professional development and best practices is also reflected in his active involvement in forums like the North American Transmission Forum (NATF) and his various certifications, including being a Certified Arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture.
