Sam Wilson joined the UAA team on July 15, 2024, and is quickly acclimating to her role as Partnership Coordinator.

“Everyone has been incredibly supportive, and together we’ve been meeting new people and getting familiar with the organization, its mission, and activities. The more I learn, the more excited I become about the work we’re doing,” Sam shared.

Responsibilities and Goals

Sam’s role involves a broad range of tasks, from crafting grant proposals to building and nurturing relationships with funders.

“Grant writing is a key part of establishing partnerships, whether through relationship building or formal proposals. This includes engaging with funding organizations, private foundations, corporations, and governments at community, state, and federal levels,” she explained. Additionally, she is focused on cultivating new and existing relationships with sponsors, working on Newsline, and diversifying advertising efforts.

“There are many opportunities within existing UAA activities that qualify for funding from various sources,” Sam noted. “My role involves moving these steps forward, securing funding, tracking it, and ensuring we deliver on our promises to funders. Reporting back on how their investments have made a difference is crucial.”

Initial Focus and Training

In the coming months, Sam will be undergoing extensive training and onboarding.

“I estimate that the first several months will involve researching opportunities and that grant funds will be a primary focus. I’ll be identifying opportunities, assessing their feasibility, and prioritizing them to develop a workflow schedule,” she said.

Sam is also keen on meeting stakeholders, including the Board of Directors and various committees, to ensure everyone is aligned and working together for UAA’s causes. “Some days I’ll be meeting with people about new programs, and other days I’ll be crafting proposals. It’s a diverse role, and I love staying busy.”

Leveraging Past Experience

With a decade of non-profit experience, Sam is well-prepared for this role. Her background includes extensive work in program development and grant writing. “I’ve written several grants annually, securing funds ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 to support various programs. In my previous position, I worked on multiple proposals simultaneously, usually 3 or 4 at a time,” she recounted.

Although it has been years since she worked in natural resources, Sam’s passion for environmental sustainability and her skills in relationship-building and grant writing motivated her to join UAA. “I love that UAA is adaptable and collaborates with multiple organizations to increase safety and promote sustainability. This is key to community growth and strength.”

Personal Interests and Community Involvement

Outside of work, Sam enjoys spending time in nature, doting on her kids and pets, and engaging in activities like camping, kayaking, and hiking. She also has a passion for pollinator gardening, with three dedicated pollinator spaces on her property.

Growing up in Oelwein, Iowa, Sam now lives in Cedar Rapids, where she participates in the local Monarch challenge, raising caterpillars and creating habitats for them. “We recently retrofitted a terrarium to raise baby caterpillars, and we were so excited to see them hatch into butterflies!” she said.

Final Thoughts

As she settles into her role, Sam has been impressed by the professionalism, kindness, and knowledge of UAA staff and Board members. “I’m grateful for the support and guidance I’ve received. It’s clear that UAA is a place where collaboration and dedication thrive.”
