The UAA is proud to recognize two outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting safety within the industry: Isaac Winkelman and Liz Westberg. Both were awarded the prestigious Will Nutter Silver Shield at Trees & Utilities in Fort Worth, Texas, last fall. This recognition is given to those who have made significant contributions to enhancing safety and improving the overall industry.

Isaac Winkelman, A Champion for Safety

Isaac Winkelman’s commitment to safety in the arboriculture industry spans nearly a quarter of a century.

According to Bryan N. Bruening, Isaac has been a forerunner in advocating safety and has played a crucial role in shaping the industry’s approach.

“Isaac began his career while studying GIS and attending Itasca Community College, where he majored in forestry,” says Bruening. “He began working for Central Applicators while still in school and quickly found his passion. Over the years, Isaac’s expertise and leadership in safety have made a lasting impact, and this award serves as a well-deserved recognition for his tireless efforts.”

Isaac has served on various boards and as an active member of the UAA Safety Committee, a group where Will Nutter was also avidly involved. Isaac has often spoken about his admiration for Will Nutter, noting how deeply Nutter cared for the industry and for the safety of those working within it. The passion for improving industry practices are qualities that Isaac continues to uphold.

Liz Westberg, Transforming Safety Culture

Liz Westberg has earned a reputation as a leader who actively fosters safety and communication within the utility arboriculture community. As the Manager of Quality Assurance and Training at Growth Solutions, Liz has significantly influenced the company’s safety culture. According to Phil Swart, Liz is known for her exceptional communication skills and engaging presentation style.

“Liz has delivered numerous impactful safety presentations across the U.S., with topics such as “Culture of Safety” and “Aggressive Homeowners” resonating deeply with audiences,” says Phil Swart, her nominator. “Her leadership has not only improved her company’s safety procedures but has also led to the doubling of safety training topics, ensuring continuous improvement in safety practices.”
